Badgers Island Sewing Colorful Accent Pillows

Textile Journey in Bali

At the heart of every beautiful piece is a story. Understanding the history, traditions, and techniques behind textiles allows us to create and restore pieces with greater appreciation and care.

As part of her ongoing professional development, Kathy travelled to Bali to participate in an indigo-dyeing and batik workshop held on a working farm. Surrounded by lush landscapes and local artisans, she immersed herself in traditional textile practices that have been passed down through generations.

The workshop explored the ancient art of natural indigo dyeing and batik, a meticulous wax-resist dyeing technique known for its intricate patterns and rich cultural heritage. Kathy gained hands-on experience preparing natural indigo vats, learning the dyeing process, and creating batik designs using traditional tools and methods. It was an inspiring reminder of the patience, precision, and artistry that goes into every handcrafted textile.

One of the most memorable experiences of the trip was visiting a tribal community where Kathy watched artisans create traditional ikat textiles and weave on back-strap looms.

Seeing these techniques firsthand was remarkable, but what made the experience truly unforgettable was learning that the textiles are far more than decorative fabrics, they are visual stories. Every motif, colour, and pattern carries meaning, representing family, nature, spirituality, and community traditions that have been preserved for centuries.

Watching a weaver create cloth while sharing the stories woven into each piece offered a powerful reminder that textiles are living expressions of culture, history, and identity. Every journey adds another layer of knowledge, creativity, and appreciation that Kathy brings back to her studio.
